Using Story to Self-Identify

Stories are the life blood of a culture. Indigenous peoples have always practiced an oral tradition. Sadly, many of the story-tellers and their stories are being lost. This course teaches the members of your tribe to write their stories so that your culture can survive in a world governed by written language. When you learn the skill and the art of writing narrative, you gain power in many ways. First you have a knowledge that opens many doors. Being good in written communication is essential in the business and education arenas. More important is that you are learning about yourself. You won’t be writing business letters. Application forms. You will learn to write your stories. A by-product is that you discover so much about yourself and who you are. And most important, you learn to publish your stories so that the world knows who you are. The course will run for 6 weeks on line, Each week there will be a lesson in written story telling that you will practice. Lessons will include strategies practiced by great writers. You will be asked to read some of their work, to learn to read as a writer . There will be small writing tasks for you to complete in the first week. In the second week, you will create the first draft of a story that is personally meaningful to you. It is a story that will give the reader a glimpse of who you are. For the next three weeks, we will work on those stories in the zoom meetings with your stories being shared orally, then translated into fiction form with feedback from Dr. Mamchur herself. The final week will be a celebration of your work, focusing on where you might publish it. By the end of this six week course you will be able to begin the important work of sharing your stories, your culture, with the world. Make your place known and understood and valued. The power is in you; the course will teach you to put it out there where it needs to be.
